Abdominoplasty or more commonly referred to as a tummy tuck, this procedure is a major surgery endeavor in the field of cosmetic surgery. It includes two incisions. The first incision is made across the hipbone directly above the pubic area and allows the plastic surgeon to visualize the anterior abdominal muscles extending up to the ribs. If any lax muscles are detected, the surgeon can tighten and reposition these muscles, stitching them into their new place. This may be the major factor associated with the maximum flatness that only a tummy tuck can achieve.

The second incision involves separating the belly button from its surrounding tissue. This must be done in order to reposition and reconstruct the naval at the end of the procedure. During surgery, liposuction is performed to remove fat along with a large section of skin.

Today, abdominal liposuction alone is more common than a tummy tuck. No doubt, cost is a contributing factor. A tummy tuck is typically twice as expensive as abdominal liposuction. Some believe the benefits of the drastically flat result of the mid-section outweigh the price tag and risk factors.

One major risk factor associated with a tummy tuck is the risk of blood clots in the lung. The large scarring left after the surgery is another disadvantage of this cosmetic procedure. Returning to work may be delayed 2-4 times longer than with liposuction. Duration of surgery is generally 2-5 hours. After surgery, temporary pain will be present accompanied by bruising, swelling, soreness and numbness in the abdominal area.

Advantages of a tummy tuck include significantly reducing the appearance of a protruding abdomen and dramatic tightening of lax muscles inside the abdominal wall. It should be noted that smoking is advised to cease at least 2 weeks before and after surgery. This is a form of cosmetic surgery and should not be used as a method for losing weight.
